Fertility

Approximately 1 in 6 couples have fertility issues. 30% percent of infertility can be attributed to female-only, 30% to male-only, 30% to issues on both sides, and 10% is unexplained. Conception can normally take up to 12 to 18 months in healthy couples.

Causes of Male Infertility

A virile man will produce 100 million sperm per millitre. A study was carried out in 1974 on sperm quality. The study found that only 7% of men had sperm concentrations above the 100 million per millitre. It was thought sperm quality was affected by an environmental factor. In 1992 a Danish paediatrician reviewed all studies of sperm counts and found a decline in average sperm density from 113 million per millitre in the 1940’s to 66 million per millilitre in the 1990. He concluded that if this 2% of decline where to continue then we (the human race) would become an infertile race in 70-80years time.

What Affects Sperm?

·         Antibiotics such as penicillin and tetracycline can affect sperm transit.

·         Stress/Tobacco/Marijuana/Alcohol has a negative affect on sperm production.

·         X-Rays can reduce sperm production for months

·         Chlamydia can cause infertility

·         Mumps/Chickenpox are viruses that can reduce sperm counts.

·         Clothing for e.g. briefs can damage production due to heat, sperm can fry if the scrotum is not able to drop and stay cool

·         Oestrogen. A high percentage of this devastates sperm production and is found in our water supply. Oestrogen is water soluble (women on the pill take in oestrogen, once they empty their bladders, this enters our water supply), plastics mimic oestrogen when breaking down, when heating microwave meals the plastic on these when heated also mimics oestrogen.

·         Soya contains oestrogen. Quick meals e.g. pizza’s, add water to foods, some pre-packed dinners all contain Soya. (BBC News, 24/02/04).

Causes of Female Infertility

  • Endometriosis. The pill can artificially calm this.
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Fluid filled tissue on or around ovaries.
  • Premature Ovarian Menopause. Hormonal.

 Enhancing Fertility Naturally

  • Age. Women are most fertile from 18 yrs – 25yrs.
  • Sex. Timing is important in relation to ovulation.
  • Ovulation. Cervical mucus becomes linear and so assists sperm travel.
  • Diet. Eating a healthy balanced diet.
  • Supplements. A multi vitamin for pregnancy contains all one needs.
  • Exercise. A half hour light weight exercise to help maintain fitness.
  • Avoidance of Stress. Stress is the biggest libido killer.
  • Avoid Anti-depressants. These decrease libido and has a negative affect on sperm harvest.

Reflexology can enhance fertility by:

  • Balancing the endocrine system
  • Stress relief
  • Stimulate production of neurochemical transmitters
  • Stimulates the immune system
  • Detoxify
